The Freshman. 1925. USA. Directed by Sam Taylor. With Harold Lloyd, Jobyna Ralston, Brooks Benedict. An overeager college freshman suffers a series of embarrassing comic mishaps before finally proving himself on the football field. Madalena's posters for the film use a paper collage technique that is unique in his surviving work. This comedy was the theater's biggest box-office success under Eastman's management. Silent. Approx. 76 min.
Harold Lloyd (most famous for hanging from a clock in "Safety Last") ranks just slightly behind Chaplin and Keaton as one of the best-loved silent comedians. This is one of his best and a great way to get to know Lloyd if you haven't already had the pleasure.
We meet in the lobby from 4:00 to 4:20 after which we will head inside to the theater. Please make it by 4:20 so we can find decent seats. I will be wearing our blown up Meetup photo pinned to my shirt. Feel free to email me beforehand if you want my cell in case you don't see us in the lobby.
“ A film that more than lived up to its reputation, and great company afterward, although the conversation quickly veered away from discussion of the film, as conversations do. ”
