The Unknown is a late silent film from 1927 featuring the Man of a Thousand Faces, Lon Chaney and a very young (and almost unrecognizable!) Joan Crawford.
Chaney was famous for creating characters with deformities and The Unknown, while not among his best known films, is certainly one his most shocking. Do yourselves a favor and do NOT read the description on the MoMA website, it gives away the entire plot. If your only exposure to Chaney is The Phantom of the Opera or The Hunchback of Notre Dame, you're in for a treat. Devoid of heavy make-up in The Unknown, Chaney's wizened face is a character in and of itself.
This is a great little shocker of a movie and I think many people will be surprised that such scenarios were being dreamed up in 1927. Come and enjoy with us and since it's only an hour long, please join us afterwards for a post-movie bite or drink. Don't worry, I promise that The Unknown will give us PLENTY to talk about!
We meet in the lobby from 5:30 to 5:50 after which we will head inside to the theater. Please make it by 5:5o so we can find decent seats.
See you there!
