This is a great article about why Jimmy Stewart is the best male movies star ever. I think it really captures something about Stewart that made people feel like he was theirs. He was the first movie star death that truly made me sad, and this was long before I had started watching old movies and only knew about "Its a Wonderful Life" (for the record the next actor who's death made me so sad was Gregory Peck).
