Coming to PFA May 29-June 27: A nine film tribute to Hong Kong action master Johnny To.
Imagine the crime melodramas from Warner Bros. or RKO, crossed with Hong Kong-style action, and a liberal dose of Western cine-literacy, and you've got Johnny To, a director the NY Times has called "One of the greatest action directors working in the world..." I recently caught his movie "Exiled," at SF MOMA, and it's Sam Peckinpah's The Wild Bunch, set in 1999 Macao! Definitely a program worth checking out, for anyone interested in a different take on what an action movie can be. See the PFA's site for more info. |
